Percy William Kilbride has been an American Actor. He was born in San Francisco, California, on July 16, 1888. He has made a career in playing country hicks, most memorable as Pa Kettle in the Ma & Pa Kettle series of feature films. Kilbride started working in the theater at the age of 12 and eventually left to become an actor on Broadway. He played French dandy for the first time in the 18th-century “A Tale of Two Cities”. His film debut was Jakey in White Woman 1933. He quit Broadway for good in 1942, when Jack Benny demanded that Kilbride would resume his Broadway part in the film version of George Washington Slept Here. Kilbride followed Benny’s film with a featured role in the Olsen & Johnson comedy Crazy House 1943. He appeared in The Southerner in 1945. In 1947, he & Marjorie Main appeared in The Egg & I, looking at Fred MacMurray & Claudette Colbert as a chic farm couple. Pa Kettle became Kilbride’s most famous role: the gentle-spirited Pa seldom raised his voice & was always ready to help friends by borrowing from “other” friends, or by assigning any kind of labor to his Indian friends Geoduck & Crowbar. Kilbride retired after filming Ma & Pa Kettle at Home in 1953, although it was the last film he worked on, a previous film in the series, Ma and Pa Kettle at Waikiki (filmed in 1952), was not released until 1955, when Ma and Pa Kettle were released at Home in 1954.
