While he was in SuperSonics, he had ankle surgery on both ankles. After onwards, he was traded to Boston Celtics on 28 June 2007, where he played with LeBron James as a team met.

He became a free agent and re-signed a two-year deal with the Celtics on 7 July 2010 with $20 million. After completion of his period on the Celtics, he was again offered to sign a two-year deal with $12 million but he refused it to join Miami Heat. He signed a three-year deal with the Heat and became a free agent in the 2014 off-season. Allen officially retired from the game on 1st November 2016.
